"Not the pretty lady.
The Oceanic Whitetip Shark, despite occupying global pelagic tropical and subtropical waters, is listed as Critically Endangered.
Sure, they've cleaned up a few human souls that've fallen victim to shipwreck or other open water incidents.
But we kill them as bycatch, slice off their fins for soup and discard their bodies - for massive profit - and consume their flesh in numerous ways; already nearly to the extinction of the whole species.
If we could, we'd probably wear them as fashion statements too.
Here's to recognising and starting to shift our society's priorities!"

"this piece demonstrates how far away people think climate change is (first picture) vs how close it actually is (second picture). ConservACTION’s Earth Day challenge helped us to learn that if we don’t act quickly, our generation and all future generations to come will be permanently impacted, most likely negatively. Of course, the only positive changes that could come are from the steps we take towards bettering our Earth now.

this is my example creative work for the 2021 earth day action challenge. my piece was focused on the danger of human activity causing a sixth mass extinction. In 2019, the IUCN predicted that 99.9% of critically endangered species and 67% of endangered species may be lost within the next 100 years. I used transition effects between clips to show the passage of time and the movements get increasingly faster towards the end to represent the race against human activity causing a sixth mass extinction for the earth.

“An African Penguin at Boulders Beach near Cape Town South Africa”
Photos by Aditya Gaur
“I took this photo on February 25th, 2009 during a day trip in and around Cape Town in which I got a glimpse of its history and the people and wildlife that call that area of the world home. I was in Cape Town for 48 hours to attend a clinical trial meeting and am not sure when I will have a chance to go back again. This photo captures a moment alone with another living being and I would like to think of it as a moment of curiosity and mutual respect.”

earlier snowmelt + warmer temperatures = drier soil
Over 80% of america’s wildfires are caused by humans, but once they are started, a warmer and drier atmosphere, caused by climate change, makes them harder to stop and control.

Beauty is diversity.
This is a mixed portrait of a woman made of different hair, eye, lip, brow, and skin types wearing a shirt made from the stars of the American Flag reminding that we are a diverse country. This portrait is upcycled from magazines that were just laying around in my house being out to no use. I was feeling uninspired so I looked through my stack of old magazines with no idea of what I wanted to do at all, but then came up with this.

Polar bears may have less than 100 years left before extinction. This is mainly because of habitat loss and less access to ringed seals, which are both caused by climate change. The sea ice of the arctic is declining at a rate of 2.6 percent every ten years. Other threats to arctic wildlife include pollution and arctic oil drilling, challenges brought on by humans.
There are so many ways to reduce your carbon footprint in all aspects of your life listed on cotap.org . They also have a carbon footprint calculator for individuals and small to medium businesses.

Sweet Life, 2020
Encaustic, oil, and up-cycled material on panel
18 x 18 x 1.625 in
I create art with up-cycled materials, giving them a second life and creating more environmental value.
Sweet Life is part of my Impression series, which was created by up-cycling discarded produce bags to create a textured impression on the surface of each painting.
On a more philosophical level, this series was created after a year of turning inwards. A year of thinking about: who I am, what I want my work to say, and what impression I want my work to make.
I’ve learned that my work is about transformation -- about embracing my process and continuing to look forward. Creating art has transformed how I see myself and the world around me. It has allowed me the freedom to take risks and to embrace chance.

The climate and conditions of the rainforest make an ideal environment for oil palms to grow. Rainforests are being cleared daily for more plantation acreage, and this process releases a large amount of greenhouse gas into the air. Palm oil-based biofuels are even worse for the planet than fossil fuels and this deforestation continues to eat away at the planet's remaining tropical rainforests. Palm oil biodiesels are three times worse for the climate than fossil biodiesels.

This photo represents how many Americans live a life of plastic without realizing they need to change. They don't understand the scale to which plastic bags are produced and consumed in this country. Approximately 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year, and thousands of marine animals die each year due to plastic pollution. So many Americans are glued to getting plastic bags in grocery stores because that is what they always do. They think that if they stop, that doesn't really make a big difference - but it does. If single persons convert to using reusable grocery bags, all of them added together would create a big difference. I urge you to talk to someone who uses plastic bags at the grocery store. Don't command them to switch; just tell them the facts, and show them how easy it is to use reusable grocery bags instead. I feel that the second method is more successful in making change. 380 billion plastic bags, every year, in the United States alone. Think about that.

Unsustainably sourced palm oil negatively affects the climate, the planet’s tropical rainforests, the animals that inhabit them, the indigenous people living in the rainforest areas, and the workers employed on palm oil plantations. You may be looking for “palm oil” in the ingredients before you purchase, but did you know that palm oil and palm oil derivatives can be present under many names? Here are some other ingredients that mean your product contains palm oil or a derivative: Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Fat, Palm Kernel, Palm Kernel Oil, Palm Fruit Oil, Palmate, Palmitate, Palmolein, Glyceryl, Stearate, Stearic Acid, Elaeis Guineensis, Palmitic Acid, Palm Stearine, Palmitoyl Oxostearamide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Kernelate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Lauryl Lactylate/Sulphate, Hydrated Palm Glycerides, Ethyl Palmitate, Octyl Palmitate, Palmityl Alcohol
